FIBA World Championship for Women (27 Sept-5 Oct 2014)

The FIBA World Championship for Women is the leading international women's basketball tournament.

Every four years, it brings together the 16 best teams from across FIBA's five continental zones. In 2014, the 17th edition of the FIBA World Championship for Women will take place in Istanbul and Ankara, Turkey.

The Group Phase and Qualifications for the Quarter-Finals will be played at Ankara Arena and Abdi Ipekci Istanbul, with the Final Phase to follow at Istanbul Sports Arena.

The inaugural FIBA World Championship for Women took place in Chile in 1953 with the USA emerging as the first champions after beating the host nation in the Final.

The USA have triumphed in eight of the 16 FIBA World Championships for Women to date, with Soviet Union accounting for a further six titles, while Australia and Brazil have won one each.

After being staged in uneven years from 1953 to 1983, the FIBA World Championship for Women was moved to even years starting in 1986, in order to have the competition played in a regular time frame and so that it would coincide with the middle of Olympic Games cycles.

The FIBA World Championship for Women is where some of international basketball's biggest stars - from Hortencia to Lauren Jackson and Amaya Valdemoro many in between - have made their mark over the year.
