FRA - Double celebration for Les Bleues coaching staff

PARIS (LFB/FIBA World Championship for Women) - French coaching duo Valerie Garnier and her assistant Olivier Lafargue are both ending their club seasons on a high ahead of masterminding the challenge of Les Bleues at the FIBA World Championship for Women in Turkey.

A delighted Garnier is celebrating delivering another piece of silverware for Tango Bourges after they broke a four-year barren spell in the French Cup by riding to a 57-48 triumph over Villeneuve d’Ascq.

"The Cup eluded us during my first season at Bourges in 2012 and last year, we were eliminated in the Quarter-Finals at Lyon," explained the play-caller.

"We had begun to leave a mark on the French Cup in the wrong way, so it was very good that we changed that.

"Both teams really wanted this win and while we eliminated Villeneuve in the semi-finals of the play-offs, we knew that in this game it would be something else and as we expected, it was difficult."

Garnier paid tribute to the second-half defense of her team which she claimed was the main foundation for the victory, as was the contribution made by French national team forward Endene Miyem, who was named MVP after recording 20 points and hauling down five rebounds.

Miyem was also quick to underline her satisfaction at finally picking up a winners medal in the competition and stressed that for Bourges at least - the season isn't quite over just yet, with more silverware on the line next week against Basket Lattes Montpellier Agglomeration.

She said: "We're really happy since this was one of our goals at the beginning of the season.

"It's good for the club to have won a trophy that has eluded us for four years.

"We played a very good game and now we're going to start planing for the Championship final."

The game was also a poignant one for Emmeline Ndongue who, after retiring from national team action at EuroBasket Women 2013 last year, will hang up her basketball shoes for good in coming weeks.

The center revelled in her last showpiece knockout final by coming up with 14 points and six rebounds.

Lafargue, meanwhile, enjoyed individual as he was elected LFB Coach of the Year after taking Basket Landes to the most successful season in their history.

He took a team including the likes of rising national team star Valeriane Ayayi into a superb second place in the French League after a late surge which boasted wins against league winners Bourges and Montpellier, whom they edged out for the runners-up spot.

Lafargue also took Landes to the quarter-finals of EuroCup Women.
