Mogi wins Group A, advances to DIRECTV Liga Sudamericana semis along with Gimnasia

COMODORO (DIRECTV Liga Sudamericana 2016) – In the final day of competition in Group A, Mogi das Cruzes of Brazil defeated host Gimnasia Comodoro of Argentina by the score of 96-86 to claim first place in the foursome. Both teams advance to the Semifinal Phase out of the group.

Mogi opened up the competition with a tough battle against Defensor Sporting of Uruguay in a game in which they were down by 6 points entering the fourth quarter. It was 20-6 run in the last ten minutes of play that sealed the victory for the Brazilian club that had Tyrone Curnell as their leading scorer with 21 points, along with 10 rebounds in the game.



Mogi was dominant in the second game of the group with a victory over Regatas Limas of Peru by the score of 95-69 with two players scoring +20 points in Curnell, who had 20 points and 8 rebounds and Shamell Stallworth, who scored 22 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in the win. The Brazilian club showed their experience and ability to close games with a consecutive strong showing in the fourth quarter of 26-11 against Regatas Lima.



In the closer against host Gimnasia, Mogi confirmed their staus as one of the most offensively dangerous teams in the competition with a 96-86 victory that once again featured two players scoring over 20 points (and four +15). Jimmy Oliveira led the way with a 26-point game, followed closely by Shamell’s 25 point, 6 rebounds and 6 assists complete performance on their way to a Group Phase undefeated record.



Gimnasia opened up their hosting duties in Group A with a 97-69 performance against Regatas Lima. The Peruvian team was taken out of the game in a second quarter that Gimnasia dominated 30-10. The Argentinean club had five players scoring in double figures and seemed focused on gearing up to what everybody expected to be the most important game in the group against Defensor Sporting.



It came and it was as dramatic as expected. Defensor Sporting, the favorites in the match-up, came out with a 31-16 first quarter and Gimnasia trailed throughout. But the team battled and was able to come back in a last quarter that they won 30-15 with a steady hand from their point guard Nicolas de los Santos, who scored 22 points with 5 rebounds and assists in the game. Gimnasia won it 91-82 and secured a spot in the semis.



Mogi and Gimnasia now move on to a Semifinal Phase that will include the best two teams from each of the Groups B-D.

Group B of the DIRECTV Liga Sudamericana will be played next week starting on Tuesday in Valdivia, Chile. It will feature Weber Bahia Basket of Argentina, Universidad San Simon of Bolivia, Hebraica Macabi of Uruguay and host Deportivo Valdivia of Chile.
