Draw results in for 2016 South American Championships

VENEZUELA (South American Championships) - The Official Draws for the 2016 South American Championships were held on Thursday afternoon at the Sports Museum of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. The championships will be held in Barquisimeto on May 20-26 (Women) and in Caracas on June 26 - July 2 (Men).

The national teams from the South American sub-zone (ABASU) were divided into two groups each to be played in a round robin format.

The groups for the South American Women’s Championship to be played in the Domo de Lara Arena in Barquisimeto on May 20-26 were drawn as follows:

Group A: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay
Group B: Ecuador, Argentina, Peru, Venezuela



The groups for the South American Men’s Championship to be played in the Poliedro Caracas in Caracas on June 26 – July 2 were drawn as follows:

Group A: Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay
Group B: Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Uruguay, Chile



The top two teams from each group advance to the Semifinal Phase where winners will play for the gold medal of the championship. The losing teams will play for third place.

After the conclusion of the Group Phase, teams in third and fourth place of each group will play for reclassification 5-8.

The top four teams in the Women’s championship will qualify for the 2018 FIBA Americas Championship, while the top five in the Men’s Championship will qualify for the 2017 FIBA Americup and Division A of the 2017 FIBA New Competition System qualifier to the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.  

Brazil won the 2014 edition of the Women’s championship that was played in Ambato, Ecuador, while Venezuela won the 2014 edition of the Men’s Championship that was played in Isla de Margarita, Venezuela.
