AS Modele survive AS NIGELEC scare

LOME (FIBA Africa Champions Cup 2016) - A moment of anger from Fabrice Azialey almost cost hosts AS Modele their first victory against AS NIGELEC of Niger at the opening of the FIBA Africa Champions Cup (ACC) 2016 Zone 3 Qualifiers on Saturday in the Togolese capital city of Lome.

In the last minutes of the game, Azialey got involved in an altercation with AS NIGELEC of Niger's Sina Bako, forcing the referee to eject him.

Despite the incident, AS Modele prevailed 63-60.

However, it was a nail-biting game for local fans, who saw the Nigerien side grow in confidence in the final seconds of the game.

With Azialey out of the game, the Nigeriens looked stronger on the offense end, but it was the hosts' resilience that separated both teams.

The serves as a morale booster for the hosts, who are yet to face Nigerian sides Kano Pillars and Customs, Elan Sportif and ASPAC of Benin in a round-robin ACC Zone 3 qualifiers.

AS NIGELEC forward Abdoulaye Almol powered his team with 20 points, while Moctar Bako Sina added 17 points to keep the home team on their toes.

But AS Modele's point guard Yannick Evoda and Aguemte-Site Malapa came strong finishing with 12 points each.

On Sunday, Elan Sportif of Benin Republic will take on Nigerian champions Kano Pillars while Customs and ASPAC - runners-up in the Nigerian and Beninese leagues, respectively - will square off for their first win.
