FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2017 participants to find out fate in Saturday's draw

CAIRO (FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2017) - Teams taking part in the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2017 on Saturday will find out what lies in wait for them when the draw is held in Cairo, Egypt.

The 16-team event will take place from July 1-9 in the Egyptian capital city.

The draw ceremony begins at 12:00pm local time (11:00am CET/GMT+1) and will be streamed live here.

The countries that will compete in the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2017 are as follows:
Host: Egypt
Africa: Angola, Mali
Americas: USA, Canada, Puerto Rico
Asia: Iran, Japan, Korea
Europe: France, Lithuania, Italy, Germany, Spain
Oceania: New Zealand

Following the suspension of Brazil's Basketball Federation, a fourth team from the Americas will be announced by FIBA to finalise the 16-team line-up.

The teams have been seeded in order to ensure the groups are of similar strength:
Pool 1: USA, Canada, France, Lithuania
Pool 2: Italy, Germany, Spain, New Zealand
Pool 3: Puerto Rico, Americas TBA, Iran, Japan
Pool 4: Egypt, Angola, Mali, Korea

The draw is open with the exception of the following limitations:

  • New Zealand will be drawn into the same group as France or Lithuania to guarantee that every group has at least one team from Europe;
  • Puerto Rico and the fourth team from the Americas (Americas TBA) will drawn in groups other than the ones containing the USA and Canada;
  • Korea will be drawn in a group other than the ones containing Iran and Japan.

Formerly known as the FIBA U19 World Championship, the tournament now carries the name of FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup to be in line with naming convention of FIBA events from 2017 onwards.

The USA are the two-time reigning champions, having won in 2013 and 2015.
