Moore: 'The goal is gold'

RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - By the time the USA take on Senegal on their Rio Olympics Group B opener, Maya Moore will become a two-time Olympian. She is in Rio de Janeiro aiming at more silverware.

The 27-year-old, who was named the Most Valuable Player, at the 2014 FIBA Women's Worl Cup, has been a key member of the American side who won the London Olympics with an 8-0 mark.

Moore talked to FIBA.com to discuss the USA's goal in Rio; She talked about their Group Phase opponents and explained what keeps her motivated to be part of a talented team such as the USA.

FIBA.com: As a team that has won the last five Olympics, is there anything that you are aiming at other than the gold medal in Rio de Janeiro Olympics?
Moore: The goal is to be the best team that we can be as a unity. We are very confident that if we come with our highest level of energy and focus that we should be able to get our goal, which is a gold medal...Having that focus and energy every single time we step on the court.

FIBA.com: As I mentioned earlier the USA has won many titles - it's been over two decades since they last lost a game at the Olympics. Does this put you under pressure to keep the winning streak?
Moore: The highest pressure that we feel is the pressure that we put on ourselves... To be ourselves every day. It doesn’t matter what other people think outside the expectations because we are holding ourselves to the highest standard that we can. That’s always the goal.

FIBA: As for Group B in which your national team is included, what sort of background do you hold about Senegal, Serbia, Spain, China, and Canada?
Moore: I just know we play Senegal first. I haven’t necessarily got the breakdown of all the teams. Our coaching staff does a good job of making sure that our minds are set on what is right in front of us. When that’s done, we focus on the next matchup. Our main focus is really on us. The main thing we wanna focus on is making sure that we know what we want to do as a team because when we execute our game plan it’s not as important what the other team does as long as we know what we wanna do on our end.

FIBA.com: The USA arrive here in Rio on the back of three wins against top ranked teams Canada, France and Australia. How is the team moving into the games?
Moore:We have a lot of momentum moving into the Games. We still know that there are some things that we wanna continue to be better at and work on and growing. But we are playing with a lot of confidence knowing that we know each other a lot better than we did 10 days ago, and we feel like - on our last game - we did some really good things on the court. We are just excited to play.

Maya Moore was named MVP at 2014 FIBA Women's World Cup

FIBA.com: With so much success as a national team, what keeps you motivated to spend summer after summer playing for the USA?
Moore: So far, I have just been enjoying playing. That’s really the highlight for me when we get together as a team… just playing with these awesome players.. create those memories, highlight and fond memories on the court.
