Ankle injury rules Dumerc out of Rio Games, Bouderra steps in

RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - With just two days before the start of the Rio Olympics, France point guard Celine Dumerc has been ruled out of the competition through an injury, the team confirmed on Thursday.

The 34-year-old playmaker will be replaced by Amel Bouderra

Dumerc suffered a left ankle injury during a Wednesday training in Rio de Janeiro. Although ultrasound and MRI exams were not conclusive, Dumerc would not be able to recover in time for the start of the Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament which tips off on Saturday.

Dumerc played a major role in helping France finish runners-up at the London Olympics four years ago.

She was set to become a two-time Olympian in Rio but won't be able to help Les Bleues as they go up against hosts Brazil, Japan, Australia, Belarus and Turkey in Group A.

Although Bouderra has played for France's youth national teams, the Rio Olympics will mark her debut with the senior women's national team.

The 27-year-old was named the Most Valuable Player of the France's Ligue Feminine de Basket this past season.
