Delly stresses importance of having Bogut in Boomers lineup

RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - The signs are good for Australia that center Andrew Bogut is recovering well from the left knee injury that he suffered in Game 5 of the NBA Finals and will play a major role for the Boomers at the Olympics.

Bogut does so many things for the national team that he could be called 'Mr Intangible'. It's a point that teammate Matthew Dellavedova drove home to FIBA.com on Wednesday after a photoshoot.

"I don't know if he's a 100 percent but he was moving pretty good yesterday. I'm sure he'll get better as the tournament goes forward." - Dellavedova

"I think he's huge for what he brings to us," the point guard said. "He just brings a different dynamic. He's a very smart basketball player and to have that as the anchor of the defense, he protects the rim, he talks on defense and makes sure everyone is in the right spot.

"He can also do a lot offensively. He's a great passer, a great screener. He's got some moves in the low block."

Bogut was playing for the Golden State Warriors in the Finals against Dellavedova's Cleveland Cavaliers. Because he is still recovering from the knock, he cannot do everything that he wants to do with the speed and power that he is accustomed to.

The big man wasn't able to play for Australia until Dallas, the team Bogut was traded to after the Finals, checked on his knee last week.

"I don't know if he's a 100 percent but he was moving pretty good yesterday," Dellavedova said. "I'm sure he'll get better as the tournament goes forward."

Australia's men are trying to so something they have never done, to reach the podium of an Olympic Games.

Four years ago without Bogut, the team arrived in London with a lot of confidence but lost to the United States in the Quarter-Finals.

It was the second consecutive Olympics that the Americans beat Australia in the last eight. The Boomers will this year take on the USA in Group A, which means if they clinch a top-four spot, they would face another team in the Quarter-Finals.

"As a team, I think we feel confident," Dellavedova said. "We've set big goals. We've been together for a few years, now. We know each other very well. We know our style of play. We feel good, ready to get started."

Group A also has Serbia and France, sides that won FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, as well as Venezuela and China.

The first opponents will be France.

"All the games are tough," Dellavedova said. "Definitely, France are a tough team and important game for us, so obviously we're going to have to be ready to go at the start of the tournament."
