Wilson headlines list of 19 gold medallists

COLORADO SPRINGS (FIBA U19 Women's World Championship) - A'ja Wilson knows what it is like to win gold when wearing a USA vest at a FIBA U19 Women's World Championship.

The talented South Carolina Gamecocks forward played with distinction two years ago in Lithuania, going up against players older than herself as she helped the USA retain their coveted title.

Wilson then further enhanced her glowing reputation by being crowned MVP of the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women.

Therefore it's little surprise she is the headline name on the initial candidate list for this year's edition of the U19 Women's Worlds and especially as she is the only player to have ever stepped out at the event.

Featuring 19 athletes who have earned a combined 29 gold medals while playing for USA Basketball, a total of 34 of the nation's top eligible players have all accepted invitations to attend trials in a bid to secure one of the coveted spots for the trip to Chekhov (Moscow Region) from 18-26 July.

"Looking at the list of invited players, I believe the committee members are going to have their hands full, because it's fill with so much talent," mused head coach Dawn Staley.

"I look forward to repeating the trials that we had last year, because it was competitive. It was respectful.

"All the players really bought into our coaching staff and the things that we had put in.

"Hopefully we'll have a repeat trials and come up with a team that will compete and win the Championship."

The list also includes no fewer than 10 players who won the FIBA U17 Women's World Championship last year in Czech Republic - including Katie Lou Samuelsonwho finished on the All-Tournament Team in Pilsen and also claimed gold playing 3x3 at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

Trials to select the final squad will be held from 14-17 May at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The USA will embark on a quest to capture a sixth-consecutive gold medal in the competition when they head to Russia and will prepare by playing a warm-up tournament in Alicante, against Australia, Canada and hosts Spain.
