Talbot, Jarry shine as Opals pull away from Japan in second friendly

FRANKSTON (2015 FIBA Oceania Championship) - Australia's Opals are playing like a runaway train right now just a couple of weeks away from their FIBA Oceania Women's Championship showdown with New Zealand.

Brendan Joyce's side blew out Japan - the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship winners - for the second game in a row on Wednesday, prevailing 84-64 at Frankston Stadium.

"I'm very happy with our execution offensively," Joyce said.

"We're pretty focused on trying to get perfection defensively because we know that we've got a great running game.

"If we get some rebounds, we can really exploit teams with our transition."

Joyce is liking what he is seeing from Steph Talbot, who once again looked like the real deal for the Opals.

The 21-year-old's 19 points made her the Aussies' leading scorer for the second straight clash with Japan.

I'm just focusing on the little things like defense, crashing the boards and getting the easy points and letting the rest of my game flow. - Talbot

"One of the pleasing things tonight was Steph Talbot backing up her big [first] game," Joyce said.

"You hope that that's going to happen with a younger player and she did that tonight.

"More-so was Rachel Jarry playing so well in her first game back."

Jarry, a member of the Opals' third-place team at last year's FIBA Women's World Championship, is coming off a knee injury.

She had 13 points and five rebounds.

Coming back from an injury to her right knee that has sidelined a player for several months can be challenging mentally.

It's like riding a bike. You just get out there and play for your teammates. - Jarry

"I was a bit nervous but I've been doing a lot of work with a sports psychologist, sort of putting that aside and just getting down to business," Jarry said.

Most pleasing for the coach was that numerous players were ready for the fight.

"Right across the board there were contributions," Joyce said.

The final game of the friendly series with Japan will be played in Ballarat on Friday night.
