Eusebio powers D'Agosto to Angolan national league title

LUANDA (AfroBasket Women 2015) - Primeiro D'Agosto were crowned Angolan champions for the second year in a row on Monday and ace Fineza Eusebio was pivotal in the triumph.

A key member of Angola's national team in the past few years, she not only controlled the new champions' defensive game, but was also crucial at the offensive end as D'Agosto trounced local and continental arch-rival Inter Clube de Luanda 67-39 in Game 2 of the best-of-three Final of the Angolan Championship.

The 1.68m point guard, who is expect to star for Angola at AfroBasket Women 2015 in Yaounde, Cameroon (24 September-3 October), was named the Most Valuable Player of the Finals.

In the last two years, Eusebio has become Angola's primary playmaker, replacing Catarina Camufal.

D'Agosto also counted within their ranks five other Angolan internationals - Rosa Gala, Ana Goncalves, Luisa Tomas, Sonia Guadalupe and Nacissela Mauricio  - who all featured for Angola at 2014 FIBA Women's World Championship for Women in Turkey.

They all stepped onto the court at Cidadela Gymnasium in the capital Luanda, eager to gain a measure of revenge against their arch-rivals. Last December, the continental champions Inter Clube inflicted D'Agosto an unexpected blow for the second time in a row, in the Final of the African Champions Cup for Women (ACCW) to clinch their fourth Africa title in five years.

However, star-studded D'Agosto - who also have Mozambique Leia Dongue in their ranks - showed why they display some of the best performers in African women's basketball as they left Inter Clube helpless throughout the Angolan Championship Finals.

In the end, Nazir Sale, the head coach of Mozambique national team who is at the helm of Inter Clube, explained that the absences of key injured players such as former ACCW MVP Italee Lucas and Pauline Akonga of the Democratic Republic of Congo, proved costly for his team.

Dongue led D'Agosto with 13 points, and new recruit 2.03m center Lindsay Taylor was the best rebounder of the Finals.

Inter Clube's Ngiendula Filipe led all scorers in the losing cause with 14 points.

Angola's newly-appointed head coach Jaime Covilha was named head coach of the year.

Eusebio was part of the team that stunned hosts Mozambique in the Final of AfroBasket Women 2013.

With the title, D'Agosto is automatically qualified for the next edition of the African Champions Cup for Women to be held later this year.
