Carleton carries Canada past Australia

MURCIA (2015 FIBA U19 Women's World Championship) - Rising star Bridget Carleton has underlined why she is expected to shine for Canada at the FIBA U19 Women's World Championship.

The shooting guard propelled her country to a morale boosting 67-60 friendly success against Australia in Murcia as Canada wrapped up their preparations for Chekhov and Vidnoe on a high.

Carleton was on fire and sunk four three-pointers en-route to a 22-point haul to inspire the triumph, with Daneesha Provo weighing in with 12 points and Lauren Yearwood hauling down 10 boards.

Canada had been subjected to a mauling by the USA in their previous game, but responded in style and it left head coach Rich Chambers purring with satisfaction.

"It was a fantastic effort by everyone against a top five team in the world," he said.

"The girls did a tremendous job bouncing back.

"This will be a great building block for the World Championship."

Meanwhile Carleton herself was also buoyed by the victory.

"We came out with a lot of energy and we transitioned our energy from defense to offense, with our momentum," she explained.

"Overall we fought really hard, which resulted in the win and we're excited to build on this for worlds."

In the other game on the final day of the tournament, Spain regained the services of their players who helped land the U20 European Championship Women crown in Lanzarote last weekend.

However, it wasn't sufficient to prevent a 75-51 loss as recently-anointed USA captain A'ja Wilson helped take down the hosts with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Spaniards and Americans will lock horns again on the opening day of the FIBA U19 Women's World Championship in Chekhov.
