Iceland stun Greece, Montenegro also promoted to Division A

CHALKIDA (FIBA U20 European Championship 2016 Division B) - Iceland shocked the hosts, to reach the Final in Greece to win promotion to Division A. Montenegro joined them in the celebrations.

Iceland took a two-point lead into the fourth quarter of their Semi-Final against Greece. They then seized control of the match on a 10-2 run to make it 65-57 in the middle part of the period, and the Greeks had to play catch-up from that moment on.

Vasileios Toliopoulos pulled the home team within a single possession with a three-pointer (69-67) in the final minute. Iceland's Kari Jonsson then missed a two-point shot to give Greece a chance to tie or take the lead, but Vasileios Charalampopoulos could not connect on a game-tying shot with five seconds left in the game. Kristinn Palsson's single free throw set the final score of 70-67, as Greece turned the ball over on their final possession.

Iceland have thus played an amazing Championship, and thoroughly deserved promotion to Division A, but their job is not done yet. They will face Montenegro in the Final, following a neighbourly match-up in the other Semi-Final.

Montenegro enjoyed a 49 percent shooting night to hand Croatia their first loss of the tournament (90-74). Aleksa Ilic led a balanced attack with 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists, also blocking a game-high three shots. Zoran Nikolic and Vasilije Knezevic had 16 points each, Emir Hadzibegovic finished with 14 and Petar Popovic was also in double digits with 10.

Croatia could not get any help from their top performer of the Championship, as Luka Bozic sat out the whole game. Borna Kapusta took over the scoring duties with 25 points, Lovro Mazalin had 16 and 13 rebounds.

It does not get any easier for Croatia in the all-important Third-Place Game on Sunday. They will battle it out with Greece for the final Division A ticket, as the third-placed team also earns promotion.

In classification games, Poland defeated Great Britain 78-74 and will play for 5th spot with Bosnia and Herzegovina, who had no trouble with Georgia (89-49). Romania's 62-56 win over Portugal earns them a fight for 9th place against Russia, who disposed of Ireland 90-35.

The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia collected a 92-75 win over Slovak Republic and will play Belarus for 13th place. Belarus eased away for a 76-43 win against the Netherlands. Bulgaria and Armenia play for 17th place, Kosovo and Estonia enter the 19th place game, whilst Albania finish the Championship in 21st.
