Russia shock Serbia, Finland knock off Turkey in wild Day 2

SAMSUN (FIBA U18 European Championship 2016) – Russia pulled off one of the biggest surprises in FIBA U18 European Championship history by blowing out Serbia by 27 points while Finland upset hosts Turkey, and Bosnia and Herzegovina beat Lithuania in a heavyweight-like rumble on Day 2.

Serbia shot just 23 percent for the game and were out-rebounded 56-42 in suffering a 70-43 defeat at the hands of Russia in Group D.

Agasiy Tonoyan (16 points and 12 rebounds) and Mikhail Andrianov (15 and 10) both had double-doubles as Russia allowed just 13 points in the first half in improving to 1-1 in the group. Serbia, who dropped to 1-1, were led by 13 points from Novak Music while stars Borisa Simanic and Aleksa Radanov were held to just 8 points combined.

While Serbia were even worse than their opening struggles with Slovenia, France rebounded from a subpar showing against Russia with a 81-50 man-handling of winless Slovenia to improve to 2-0. France's 15-year-old Wunderkind Sekou Doumbouya led the charge with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals.

Finland took a major step to reaching the Quarter-Finals as they knocked off hosts Turkey 65-53 with Edon Maxhuni scoring 20 points and Elias Valtonen picking up 16 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. That leaves both teams at 1-1 in Group B while Turkey must face Germany and Finland take on Greece on Day 3.

Germany used a big fourth quarter to pull away from Greece 85-70 as six players scored in double figures, topped by Nelson Weidemann's 15 points. Louis Olinde chipped in 12 rebounds, 9 rebounds and 3 assists off the bench for Germany. Greece dropped to 0-2 despite 14 points from Michail Lountzis.

Bosnia and Herzegovina grabbed control of Group C as they knocked off Lithuania 79-70 in a real slugfest of powers. Darko Talic led the way with 19 points while Dzanan Musa collected 17 points and 9 rebounds for Bosnia and Herzegovina, who improved to 2-0 in the group. Lithuania, who got 25 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 blocks from Tadas Sedekerskis and 18 points an 11 rebounds from Gytis Masiulis, are 1-1 ahead of their final group game against Israel.

Latvia picked up their first victory in Group C, beating Israel 71-70 as 2000-born Arturs Kurucs nailed two three-pointers in the final 37 seconds, including the game-winner with 1.2 seconds left. Arturs Strautins scored 24 points with 12 rebounds for the Latvians while Karlis Garoza had 10 points and 11 rebounds and Roberts Blumbergs chipped in 12 points and 9 rebounds.

Israel suffered another heart-breaker going down in the final seconds a day after giving up a 20-point lead to Bosnia and Herzegovina before going to overtime and losing. Michael Moshkovitz picked up 14 points and 12 rebounds for winless Israel.

Spain and Italy both booked their tickets to the Quarter-Finals with victories over Sweden and Croatia respectively to improve to 2-0 in Group A.

Spain got 16 points from Aleix Font and 11 points, 12 rebounds from Sergi Martinez in a hard-fought 58-48 win over Sweden, who had 15 points from both Jonatan Arvidsson and Felix Lemetti, fell to 0-2.

Italy were paced by Davide Moretti's 23 points in an 84-78 win over Croatia, who are also 0-2 and will play Sweden on Day 3 for third place.
