MUNICH (EuroLeague Women 2017) – We check in with some of those involved in Week 1 of EuroLeague Women 2017 as we also check out how the action has unfolded on social media.

There was plenty of noise made on and off the court at Perfumerias Avenida as they took the headlines with their vibrant 82-73 success against UMMC Ekaterinburg. There were some nice plays to reflect on, including this one from debutante Erica Wheeler.

You also have to recognise that value of home support when an opposing player like Alba Torrens points to how important it can be. Of course, the UMMC star won the title with her former club back in 2011.

"Avenida prepared a very aggressive game and we were not able to control that," conceded Torrens.

"It is true that we could have been closer to them but, to us, its a big fail. We need to learn a lot of things from this game.

"We knew it was going to be like this as they are a good team, but we can’t have excuses.

"It is always special to come back to Salamanca and the Avenida fans are the sixth player for them."

Fans made a huge effort for Wisla Can-Pack too at the Krakow Arena, where 11,218 watched their heroes push the visiting Dynamo Kursk close.

The hosts only just ran out of steam and eventually lost 67-61 against the backdrop of an explosion of colour and unwavering passion from the stands.

It made it perhaps even more painful for new Wisla signing Claudia Pop, who was sidelined with an injury. She will be extra motivated to get back healthy after witnessing this!

There was a meeting in this game of two Spanish coaches, with Jose Hernandez of Wisla commenting, "I would like to say a huge thank you to our fans. It was amazing to play in front of so many spectators.

"Since we played with one of the best teams in Europe, I can say [despite losing], I am happy with my team."

Lucas Mondelo succeeded Hernandez as head coach of Spain and he took a hard fought win in his first EuroLeague Women outing with Kursk.

"We know that these games will be difficult," said the play-caller.

"In EuroLeague Women, all the away games are very hard and I am happy for the result."

As well as Dynamo Kursk being frontrunners, Fenerbahce will be looking to end their agonising wait for an elusive first title. After sneaking a 75-73 overtime win against Beretta Famila Schio, their prospects improved further when the incoming Sandrine Gruda gave the thumbs up.

There was an amazing 90-82 double overtime win for Uniqa Sopron at CCC Polkowice and naturally huge excitement and a sense of accomplishment afterwards. 

Opals’ Olympian Cayla George mused, "We had a great team spirit and we played really well. It was a great experience for us and we now feel stronger after this win."

As for CCC Polkowice, it’s going to take quite something to pick themselves back up, with head coach Vadim Czecuro finding it hard to be too critical of his players.

He explained, "It was an interesting game and we made a lot of mistakes and this was our biggest problem.

"I must congratulate my players for fighting and leaving their hearts out on the floor."
