Excitement builds as Gdynia prepares for a return to European competition

GDYNIA (EuroCup Women 2017) - The days, hours, minutes and seconds are being counted down by the fans at Basket 90 Gdynia as they prepare for a return to European club competition after an agonising hiatus of five years.

Gdynia is a name synonymous with the women’s game across Europe after hosting EuroLeague Women All-Star games and most impressively, as a club who were perennial competitors in the prestigious competition.

Some of the biggest names have played in Gdynia in the past and while they aren’t making a return to EuroLeague Women - the prospect of playing a EuroCup Women Qualifier against BCF Elfic Fribourg has got supporters relishing the prospect of a Regular Season campaign in what is the club’s first actual foray into the competition.

Along with reigning champions Tango Bourges Basket, EuroCup Women has never had a rookie team with so much European experience.

Indeed when it comes to Basket 90 Gdynia, they have as much veteran know-how as is possible in just one player via Montenegrin playmaker Jelena Skerovic. Now 35-years-old, but still pulling the strings brilliantly, she will lead the club from the backcourt.

She will line-up alongside another hugely experienced competitor in WNBA star Renee Montgomery, who has played in Europe for the likes of Chevakata, Nadezhda, Uni Gyor, and Tarsus Belediyesi. Last season she played in Australia with Canberra Capitals and averaged almost 15 points per game.

Meanwhile Carolyn Swords will add strength under the basket and like Montgomery, she has WNBA experience and also stepped out in the WNBL last season, averaging 12 points and 7 boards per game for the Sydney Uni Flames.

There are also new arrivals in the shape of Lithuania national team forward Monika Grigalauskyte, who impressed last year at EuroBasket Women 2015 and she joins after a season playing for Uni Gyor in Hungary. In terms of Polish players, Aldona Morawiec comes in from MKK Siedlce and Karolina Puss re-joins from Artego Bydgoszcz.
