Serbia not lacking confidence despite Group Phase defeats

MADRID (FIBA Basketball World Cup) - Serbia may have lost to the other three teams that reached the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup Round of 16 with them from Group A. But the Balkan powers have not lost any of their usual confidence heading into the knockout game against Greece.

"We know that we lost to France and Brazil, but we haven't lost our confidence. That is the most important thing We are 100 percent mentally and physically fit for (Sunday's Round of 16 game against Greece).

Besides losing to France and Brazil, the Serbs also fell to Spain, booking only wins against Egypt and Iran. But that doesn't bother Bjelica.

"Our group was the most difficult in the tournament, and I think we played good. We showed that we can play against anybody."

The 26-year-old Bjelica has been one of Serbia’s leaders, ranking second in scoring with 12.6 points per game and grabbing a team-best 6.8 rebounds per contest.

"We also need to be lucky a little bit. This kind of game is very difficult. Greece won five games and now if they lose they will go home. It will be a very difficult game. All we want is to win the game," said Bjelica.

The Fenerbahce forward acknowledges that Greece and their veteran players will pose a challenge.

Greece don't have a superstar but they have 12 very good players. It will be very difficult game, but we're here to win. - Bjelica

"We need these kinds of games. We know how to play. That is very important. We will be playing against a very experienced team. They play like a team.

Bjelica points to defense as they key to the game.

"In basketball, everything depends on defense. If we play tough defense then it will make it easier to score on the fast break. We are a young team and we need to run," he said.
