KOR - Korea juggle priorities as Young Joo takes up reins again

SEOUL (FIBA World Championship for Women) - After helping Korea to win the 2013 William Jones Cup for Women, Kim Young Joo has been handed the country's national team coaching reins for the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women in Turkey.

We Sungwoo was at the helm of the team for the 2013 FIBA Asian Championship for Women in Bangkok at the end of last year, but having taken Korea to the Final of the competition, he has now been tasked with focusing firmly on a successful medal chase at the Asian Games.

The event overlaps with the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women and so Asian teams wanting to compete in both tournaments are having to juggle their priorities accordingly.

As host nation of the Asian Games which will take place in Incheon, that situation is magnified even more so for Korea, who seem determined to meet the pressure of delivering against medal targets.

The biggest decision however, will be how Korea splits playing personnel and who ends up on Turkish soil and who stays at home for Asian Games duty.

The early indications are that Young Joo, who helped Korea to clinch their William Jones Cup triumph with an unbeaten record, could be left with a youthful team at his disposal.

However, such plans are still very much to be finalised during coming months, in what promises to be a significant dilemma and a delicate balance for the coaching staff and Federation.

Not least, because Korea have one of the most modest talent pools to choose from.

Young Joo has plenty of experience having also served as an assistant to the national team at previous major tournaments, with his most recent role at club level being with KB Life Winnus in the WKBL.
