CAN - Thomaidis looks forward to tryouts for Turkey 2014

EDMONTON (FIBA World Championship for Women) - Canada head coach Lisa Thomaidis is looking forward to working with the 21 players who have been invited to attend a tryout camp to state their case for inclusion on the final roster which will attend the FIBA World Championship for Women in Turkey.

Currently in her second year at the helm, the play-caller will use the gathering at the team's headquarters in Edmonton to trim down the list of candidates in preparation for going up against Group B opponents France, Mozambique and the tournament hosts Turkey in Ankara.

The core of the team which won a silver medal at the FIBA Americas Championship for Women in Mexico last year are in contention, with a strong mix of veteran and Olympic experience, as well as some exciting young players.

"There's a tremendous amount of talent coming in for try-outs," insisted Thomaidis.

"Our team is getting older and more experienced, there are a lot of players playing professional around the world and for them to then bring their talents back and vying for a spot on our national team is really going to be exciting to see.

"We made some great strides last summer - both individually and from a team perspective, so it will be fun to see the improvements made in this season."

"We're super excited to get going and see what the summer will bring."

The only omission from the team which made the Final in Xalapa is Krista Phillips, while Natalie Achonwa is included but not expected to be able to recover in time from the serious injury she sustained playing with Notre Dame earlier this year.

It also remains to be seen whether Kayla Alexander will be able to take time off from her WNBA duties with the San Antonio Stars.

Other notable inclusions are Michelle Plouffe who played at London 2012, as well as a several rising stars.

These include Shaylisa Colley and Jamie Weisner who played at the FIBA U19 World Championship for Women in Lithuania last year, with the latter making the All-Tournament Team.

There is also an opportunity for UCLA standout Nirra Fields.
