CAN - Preparation remains the key for Thomaidis

EDMONTON (FIBA World Championship for Women) - Canada head coach Lisa Thomaidis is ready to put her players through an intensive preparation programme on home soil to help the team meet its objectives at the FIBA World Champioship for Women.

Now in her second year at the helm, it's becoming a familiar strategy which served her well last year, when the Canadians reached the Final of the FIBA Americas Championship for Women for the first time in almost two decades.

"We are so very proud of this team," explained the play-caller.

"We are looking forward to building upon the successes that we had last year.

"We have a full schedule of exhibition games this summer that will challenge and prepare us for the World Championship in September."

The hard work will begin with a training camp on 9 June which will get the players ready for the Edmonton Grads International Classic (EGIC) tournament. This is a three-game exhibition series against Americas rivals and fellow Turkey 2014-bound Brazil, due to take place between 26-28 June.

This will be followed by two further camps, the first in early August and then the final camp in early September.

Denise Dignard, Director of Women's High Performance is confident that spending time in their new home of Edmonton will serve the team well.

Indeed she is hoping that the history behind such a strategy can potentially inspire the players.

"Our women have an extensive training session this summer here in Edmonton preparing them for the best possible result at the Worlds in Turkey this September," said Dignard.

"Training here in Edmonton builds on the storied tradition of women's basketball that began with the Edmonton Grads that won the first-ever world women's title in 1924.

"It is truly inspirational," added Dignard.

Canada are in Group B and will play France, Mozambique and Turkey.
