BRA - Dos Santos leads Americana to title success

RECIFE (LBF/FIBA World Championship for Women) - Clarissa Dos Santos has emphasised why she could be a big factor for Brazil at the FIBA World Championship for Women after fuelling domestic championship success for Americana.

The forward proved to be the driving force for her team as they rode to a 2-0 series triumph against Recife, to re-capture their Brazilian league crown.

The 26-year-old fell just one rebound short of a classy double-double after harvesting 16 points in a narrow 66-62 victory which sealed the deal for Americana.

The added bonus for Brazilian fans is the way that Dos Santos has been combining in the frontcourt alongside club and national team colleague Damiris Dantas bodes well for Turkey 2014.

The pair won bronze at the  2013 FIBA Americas Championship for Women in Xalapa, Mexico and added to their trophy haul with this latest success, as did shooting guard Karla Da Costa who is also likely to be on the plane to Ankara.

With the entire Brazilian roster from last year in Mexico playing their club basketball on home soil, it was perhaps inevitable that the title match-up was going to be littered with national team players.

This also meant considerable disappointment for kingpin Erika Souza, Nadia Colhado and veteran playmaker Adriana Pinto, who were all on the losing side.

Meanwhile, in the end-of-season awards dished out by the Brazilian League and voted for by all club coaches and team captains, Taina Paixao was named as the 'revelation of the season'.

The 22-year-old guard made her debut with Brazil last year and made an instant impact after harvesting 19 points against Argentina in the gold medal clash at the FIBA South American Championship for Women.

And, having continued her good form into the club season with Ourhinos Basquete, she should also be a strong contender to make the final roster of head coach Luiz Augusto Zanon.

At the FIBA World Championship for Women, Brazil will compete against Czech Republic, Japan and Spain in Ankara's Group A.
