KOR - Federation President pins hopes on phenomenal Park

SEOUL (FIBA U17 World Championship for Women) - Korean Basketball Federation President Yul Pang is banking on one of the best prospects in Asian basketball to steer his nation to success at the FIBA U17 World Championship for Women.

Fans heading to the Czech Republic will be able to enjoy watching the 1998-born and phenomenally talented Ji Su Park, who will inevitably be the driving force behind Korea's bid as she prepares to step out in the competition for the second time.

The rising frontcourt star has already showcased her talent at the tournament when she appeared two years ago in Amsterdam when aged just 13 years old.

After shrugging off a slow start, she grew visibly stronger and posted a memorable 13 points and 14 rebounds in the team's penultimate game against Turkey.

Once more playing against opponents up to four years older than her, Park subsequently showcased her skills at the FIBA U19 Championship for Women in Lithuania last year, where she was one of the main talking points.

The teenager is also on the radar of President Pang who can't wait for her to arrive on the senior national team scene and is only happy to discuss the soon-to-be jewel in the crown of Korean basketball.

"Yes, she is our hope for the future of women's basketball in Korea," he confirmed.

"Although it sometimes feels as if she is growing too slowly - almost like a turtle.

"I just wish she could grow two or three years every single year."

Even though she is still a couple of years away from adulthood, Park is already becoming a role model for her peers and also for even younger girls who are now picking up a basketball having been inspired by her exploits.

"In Korea, the number of young girls learning and playing basketball is already increasing because of her," explained Pang.

"She is often targeted by the media and she is our new-born young star after long time.

"Our association will put our earnest efforts into cultivating such young talented players like Ji Su Park," he added with pride.

Hyun Il Cho will be taking responsibilities as the head coach for the team and he will not only have Ji Sun Park at his disposal, but also a couple of other 1998-born players who will also be expected to establish themselves as team leaders.

Firstly, the highly-rated Eomji Han was recently crowned MVP of 2014 National Basketball Tournament for Korean secondary schools and is tipped to shine.

Meanwhile, Hyemi Lee recently racked up the best ever triple-double record as a junior high school competitor which has had many people excited about her potential.

Korea will face Hungary and the hosts when the tournament tips-off inKlatovy & Plzen.
