Rwanda secure ticket for FIBA U16 African Championship 2017

MOMBASA (FIBA U16 African Championship 2017) – Rwanda booked their slot to the FIBA U16 African Championship 2017 set to be held in Vacoas-Phoenix, Mauritius from July 13-22.

Rwanda went unbeaten in four games at the just concluded Zone 5 tournament in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa that attracted Tanzania and hosts Kenya with all teams playing each other twice.

Moise Mutokambali’s side tipped off the five-day tournament with a comfortable 73-48 win over the hosts Kenya last Friday before making light work of Tanzania 112-27 the next day.

Rwanda saw off Kenya once again 77-51 in their third game on Sunday before defeating Tanzania 72-33 on Monday to finish the tournament unbeaten as champions that will represent the Zone 5 region.

“We are very pleased with our performance that has given our country the honour it deserves. This is a great achievement because we have won the trophy away from home so it means so much to us." - Mutokambali

“Defending our title means that youth basketball in Rwanda is growing. We started this journey in 2014 and have seen the results get better by the day in the last three years.”

Kenya finished second while Tanzania settled for third place at the regional tournament.

“We are very pleased with our performance that has given our country the honour it deserves. This is a great achievement because we have won the trophy away from home so it means so much to us" Mutokambali said.

Rwanda will play at the 12-team biennial competition that will serve as a qualifier for the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2018 in Argentina.
