Antonis Fotsis’ absence at last year’s EuroBasket with a finger injury was a hammer blow to Greece’s chances because they missed his rebounding, shooting, interior defence and experience. Fotsis has a big wing span which helps him on defence and on the boards. He won the European title with Greece in 2005 but was more prominent in Japan when he averaged 10.4 points and 4.2 rebounds to help the team reach the final. A European champion with Panathinaikos in 2000, he was drafted by Memphis in the NBA and crossed the Atlantic but did not earn many minutes. To his credit, he put that disappointment behind him and returned to Europe to become a big star and contributor for Greece. Fotsis was outstanding at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
