International career: Head Coach of the ARG National Team at the 2005 FIBA Americas Championship
Argentina coach Sergio Hernandez had a tough act to follow when he took the National Team reins from Ruben Magnano, the man who guided Argentina to the gold medal at the Athens Games.
Hernandez did well in Japan two years later, coming within one Andres Nocioni missed three-pointer of coaching in the final. His team had to settle for a place in the bronze medal game and Argentina lost to the United States. Hernandez showed his savvy last year in Las Vegas when despite playing without Manu Ginobili, Fabricio Oberto, Pepe Sanchez and Walter Herrmann – the last two announced their international retirements several months later - Argentina won silver to reach the Beijing Olympics. A huge hit as the coach of Boca Juniors before taking on the National Team job, Hernandez this season was in charge of Peñarol Mar del Plata and led them to the inaugural FIBA Americas League title.
