Sofoklis Schortsianitis was a huge hit at the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan following a very impressive campaign at Olympiacos under then coach Jonas Kazlauskas. In the time since, he has struggled to maintain his focus and battled weight issues. The mid-season appointment of National Team boss Panagiotis Yannakis at Olympiacos after the Reds’ sacking of Pini Gershon led to a Schortsianitis revival. Big Sofo agreed to attend a special center in Switzerland to lose weight and made his first steps back to basketball in the spring. `Baby Shaq’ is very strong, tall, heavy, but at the same time extremely explosive as a player and quick, with a variety of moves in the paint. At his best, Sofo can be the player to change the momentum of a game and that was definitely the case at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament where no opponent was able to stop him.
