Ankara lies at the heart of the Anatolian Peninsula, one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions in the world, boasting Hittite, Phrygian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman archaeological sites.

The first traces of man date back to the Bronze Age more than four thousand years ago. In modern times, the city gained prominence under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk during the national resistance which followed World War I. It was declared the capital of the Turkey upon the proclamation of the Republic in 1923.

Turkey's second most populous city after Istanbul, Ankara not only houses the Turkish parliament, government and ministries as well as all foreign embassies; it is also a major industrial and commercial hub.

Sport plays a big role in daily life in Ankara with Turkey's two most popular sports, football and basketball, being played and followed on a large scale.

While the successes of Ankara-based sports teams have been unable to match those of Istanbul, Ankara has one top division football club as well as three top division basketball clubs, CASA TED Kolejliler, Hacettepe University and Türk Telekom.

The 11,000 seat Ankara Arena is owned by the Turkish Basketball Federation (TBF) and which welcomed the 2010 FIBA World Championship Group C games, including those of hosts Turkey.

Following the World Championship, this brand new arena became the home of Turkish basketball league sides Casa TED Kolejliler and Türk Telekom BK, replacing the nearby Ankara Atatürk Sport Hall.
