Liepaja: A Closer Look

Liepaja is a city of 87,000 people, located in the far west of Latvia on the Baltic Sea. It is best known as one of the countries most important ports and industrial centers and has become a popular tourist destination.

During the time when Latvia was controlled by the Soviet Union, and before that Czarist Russia, Liepaja was home to Karosta, an important military base. The remains of Karosta continue to be a popular tourist destination in the city.

Since independence Liepaja has grown into a thriving and culturally diverse city which features its own symphony orchestra as well as several important music festivals.

Liepaja is also home to a Latvian Olympic Center (opened in August of 2008) a state of the art facility that has hosted games during the EuroBasket Women in 2009.

Liepaja: Getting There


By plane:
The closest aiport to Liepaja is Riga International Airport, the biggest airport in the Baltic area which is situated 13 km southwest of Riga city. The airport directly connects Riga with 60 destinations in 30 countries serving 3,690,549 passengers in 2008, a 17% increase compared to 2007.

By train:
Liepaja has train connections to Jelgava and Riga. A trip to Riga takes about 3 hours.

By car:
The main road A9 links Liepaja to Riga (215 km) and the A 11 goes south to the Lithuanian border, which is just 50 kilometers away.

By bus:

Complementing the few trains a day a busline offers convenient transport from Riga to Liepaja. Buses leave almost every hour during the day and take about 3 1/2 hours.
