Fitchett was MVP when leading Nelson College to the 2000 New Zealand Secondary Schools title and is now respected as one of the steadiest hands in the nation’s basketball.
The highlight of his professional career so far was Nelson’s NZNBL championship triumph in 2007.
A deadly perimeter shooter, during that run to the title Fitchett drilled eight of 10 shots from three-point range in an overtime win against Waikato.
He finished with 34 points in that victory.
Already in tune with coach Nenad Vucinic’s system since he played under him at Nelson, Fitchett appears to have solidified his position as back-up point guard for the national team, averaging 3.5 points and playing an important role in limited minutes at last year’s FIBA Oceania Championship.
