Injury to Andrew Bogut, the retirement of Chris Anstey and the withdrawal of Nathan Jawai have given 23-year-old Baynes the opportunity to make his debut at a FIBA World Championship.

A powerful big man who enjoyed a strong NCAA career with Washington State, Baynes can score points in a hurry, as evidenced by his average of 10ppg in just 15 minutes per game in the Baltic League last season, highlighted by 21 points and 7 rebounds in 22 minutes against Liepaja.

Boomers coach Brett Brown will have to use Baynes sparingly however, as he picked up a foul every four minutes on average in his rookie professional season, On his international debut last year in the FIBA Oceania Championship, Baynes blocked four shots in 13 minutes as Australia defeated New Zealand, 84-77, in game one.
