There has been a real dearth of quality point guards emerging in German basketball – or at least in comparison to the potential gems being uncovered in the frontcourt.
Per Gunther is something of an exception and is still getting better in his role as a young playmaker.
He shrugged off some early season injury worries to enjoy a second consistent season with Ulm and could find himself thrust into the action as the back-up point guard. While he has the talent, Bauermann will have to be convinced he also has the maturity to handle the ball-pressure that will inevitably come his way if given an opportunity.
He doesn’t have much of a perimeter shot and needs to pick up his defence at this level although it is good considering his lack of size.
Gunther was meant to travel to EuroBasket last year but got injured and now he is definitely someone who could flourish if handed some experience on the floor in Turkey.
