Female FutureTheir game is there, their names aren’t. Just like for the Junior Men’s tournaments, this championship is the showcase of talent, determination and the quality of youth programs around the globe. The list of the players, who played in former edition, reads like a who’s who of women’s basketball.Some of the biggest stars of the game made their international debut in this championship: Lisa Leslie, Michele Timms, Janeth Arcain, Marga Dydek, Cathy Melain, Lauren Jackson and Ilona Korstine. Is it good for women’s basketball to lower the ring? Some of the players in this championship will tell you: “No need, we can dunk the ball anyhow” 16 teams from five continents will give the proof that it might be worthwhile to go to Bangkok and discover a beautiful country and the brilliant future of women’s basketball. Eligible are all players who are born 1st January 1990 or later. The teams placed 1st – 3rd in each group will qualify for the next round in two groups of six teams, before the top four placed teams go to the Final Round. In the previous seven editions the USA won the gold medal three times, the Soviet Union twice, whereas Australia and the Czech Republic could secure the title once. |
