International career: FIBA Africa Championship for Men 1999 (Assistant), FIBA Africa Championship for Men 2001, FIBA Africa Championship for Men 2005 (Assistant), FIBA World Championship for Men 2006, :FIBA Africa Championship for Men 2007 (Assistant).
Gaye played his entire career in Senegal at ASFO club and served as the captain of the National Team until 1991.
Having worked with the men’s national side since 1999, both as an assistant and head coach, he led the men at the 2006 FIBA World Championship (Gaye replaced Abdou Ndiaye, who had been fired a few months before the Japan-based event). For the 2007 FIBA Africa Championship, he served as an assistant. Gaye was at last year’s FIBA Africa Championship for Women in Dakar and looked on from the stands. After grabbing the helm following their runners-up finish to Mali, he decided to bring in some new faces from France who possess French /Senegalese passports. Named coach two months before the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women, “Tapha”, as he is nicknamed, will begin a new a cycle for the Senegalese, introducing young prospects to gain experience for top International competitions.
