Dirk Bauermann demands that his teams play tough-as-nails defence while not making mistakes on offence in an effective, half-court passing game.

An assistant coach at Fresno State for two years before returning home in 1989 to build a powerhouse at Leverkusen, Bauermann led the club to seven straight German championships in the 1990s. As the coach of Oostende in Belgium, he guided the team to the Korac Cup semi-finals. Bauermann joined Bamberg in 2001 and turned a relegation-threatened team into a powerhouse. In 2005, he steered them to the title and in 2006 led Bamberg into the Euroleague Top 16. Bauermann’s Bamberg also captured the 2007 German title. Bauermann served as Germany’s interim coach in 1994. He took on the job full-time nine years later and forged a strong group of almost role players around his superstar, seven-foot NBA star Dirk Nowitzki. The strategy paid a big dividend in 2005 when Germany won silver at the EuroBasket. In May, after Bamberg’s early exit from the play-offs, Bauermann announced he was parting with Bamberg to devote his energies exclusively to the duties of National Team coach.
