Career: Olimpija Ljubljana (Slovenia-Division 1A, 1997-98), Virtus Bologna (Italy-Lega, 1998-99), Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA, 2000-03), San Antonio Spurs (NBA, 2003-06), Toronto Raptors (NBA, 2006-08). Selected in the first round of the 1998 NBA draft (#17), by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
When Nesterovic beat the famous Fab Five (yes Chris Webber’s Fab five) in an exhibition match a several years ago, the Slovenian center was only 15 years old. What he showed that day sent a buzz all over Europe. Pretty soon, Rasho was on the short list of every European GM. Greatness was upon him. Now 32 years old, Nesterovic is an established NBA player though one who never really fulfilled those great expectations. Yes he has won an NBA championship with the Spurs… But he could have done so much more. Dreams of twin tower domination - first with Kevin Garnett in Minnesota and then with Tim Duncan of the Spurs - never materialised. Now with the Raptors, Rasho is still an enigma, capable one night of scoring 16 points and grabbing eight ebounds and then disappearing the very next game with only two points. Nevertheless, he just sign a whopping $42million contract (making him the highest paid Slovenian athlete ever). To be fair, his production of 11.9 points and 7.6 rebounds was a big factor at the last EuroBasket. Let’s hope he can do that again this summer for Slovenia.
