Evaristo Pérez has been hugely successful in his work so far with Spain’s National Team. After only one year in women’s basketball, and an impressive career in the men’s national leagues, there were high expectations ahead of his first tournament as coach of Spain’s women.
Pérez led Spain to their first silver medal at the EuroBasket Women last year after the country’s bronze-medal finishes at the previous three EuroBaskets. Fans in Chieti, Italy, watched how Amaya Valdemoro & Co played the same up-tempo game that Perez had employed at Burgos to turn them from a medium-level side into a very competitive squad. The coach will continue to rely on an up-tempo, fast-breaking style of game with clear offensive schemes in half-court sets to lead the Spanish women not only to the Beijing Games, but to the podium once at the Olympics. Pérez will also aim to make Spain’s team defence one of the most formidable in the world. He will expect his charges to play with the same physicality that saw them battle back from a large half-time deficit against Russia to almost spring an upset in the gold medal game.
