A former coach in the Australian WNBL, McHugh achieved success on this side of the Tasman when he guided Wellington Saints to the 2003 NBL championship and earned Coach of the Year honours.
Saints also took the regular season crown the following season and McHugh became coaching advisor to the Tall Ferns for their 2004 Olympic campaign. He took the reins in 2005 when Tom Maher was lured to the Chinese national programme and guided them to silver medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. In 2007, McHugh was appointed BBNZ’s women’s coaching director, guiding the Ferns and also overseeing the Australian WNBL franchise in Christchurch. This year, he masterminded New Zealand’s first ever victory over Australia in women’s basketball at the Good Luck Beijing Olympic test event.
