USA Basketball’s history books are filled with players like Cappie Pondexter, a dedicated player who thrives on competing for the red, white and blue, and one who is the most internationally experienced young players on the USA roster. She was first noticed by USA Basketball in 2000 as a member of the U18 National Team and continued to compete year after year, giving up summer vacations, time with friends and family, summer school, you name it. Not to say the sacrifices weren't worth it. While friends were goofing off during the summer breaks Pondexter was mining for medals and she mostly struck gold wherever she went and PRO ly lists six gold medals, one silver and one bronze in her trophy case. Most notable among them are the 2007 FIBA America Championship, which earned the U.S. its Olympic berth, and the 2003 FIBA World Championship For Young Women. In addition to playing in Turkey the past two seasons for Turkey’s Fenerbache SK squad, Pondexter owns the 2007 WNBA title and was named the Finals MVP in leading the Mercury to the crown. She’s been in two WNBA All-Star Games, was the MVP of the 2007 EuroLeague All-Star Game and finished second behind USA teammate Seimone Augustus for 2006 WNBA Rookie of the Year honors.
