Born in New Zealand, Kerr grew up in Australia, where she played WNBL for Melbourne and Townsville, and helped Kilsyth to the 2002 Australian Basketball Association title. She first represented New Zealand in 1999, missed selection for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, but four years later, attended the Athens Olympics, where she compiled a double double in the crucial pool victory over China. Kerr also helped the Ferns to silver medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and co-captained (with Jody Cameron) in the 2007 Oceania Championships. She took on sole captaincy at the Good Luck Beijing Olympic test event in 2008 and led New Zealand to their first ever win over Australia.
