The 2007-2008 season was a funny one for Yelena Leuchanka though rest assured, none of the players that had to guard her laughed. Leuchanka, a dominating center last year at the EuroBasket Women in Chieti where Belarus won bronze, started with TEO Vilnius and then transferred to UMMC Ekaterinburg. French coach Laurent Buffard watched his Ekaterinburg team improve greatly with the addition of the 25-year-old Leuchanka on the eve of the play-offs. She helped them upset previously undefeated CSKA Moscow in the quarter-finals but they lost to Spartak Moscow Region at the final four. Leuchanka had to deal with numerous knee surgeries between 2000 and 2006. She was the first Belarusian to play in the WNBA, turning out for the now defunct Charlotte Sting.
