Tina Thompson finally achieved her dream of winning an Olympic gold medal in 2004 and the emotions of a long road showed on her face on the medal stand. Listed as an alternate for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team, she was named to both the 1998 and 2002 USA World Championship teams, but was injured and unable to compete, which is why the tears streamed freely down her face when the USA’s anthem was playing in Athens. A member of the U.S. team that earned its Olympic berth by capturing gold at the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship, Thompson also owns gold medals from the 2006 Opals World Challenge, where she was named to the All-Tournament Team, and 1996 R. William Jones Cup; a silver medal from the 1995 World University Games and bronze from the 2006 FIBA World Championship. She boasts four WNBA championship rings, two EuroLeague titles and a pair of Russia Super League crowns; was named All-WNBA six times and to seven WNBA All-Star Teams, earning MVP accolades at the 2000 WNBA All-Star Game. She also earned 2007 EuroLeague Final Four MVP honors after leading Spartak Moscow Region to the title. Additionally, Thompson was an All-American at the University of Southern California and after completing her collegiate career became the first player ever selected in a WNBA Draft. Thompson has a son named Dyllan, who was born May 12, 2005.
