Ramunas Butautas, the son of legendary Lithuanian player/coach Stepas Butautas, was named National Team boss after Antanas Sireika stepped down following the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan.
Taking over the nation’s top team was a logical move for the 44-year-old. He had steered the country’s under-20 side to a silver medal at the 2003 World Junior Championship and then two years later guided Lithuania to gold at the FIBA U21 World Championship in Argentina. In his first campaign with the Lithuanian senior team, he coached the country to bronze at EuroBasket 2007 in Madrid. Lithuania were unlucky in Spain as they played their semi-final one day after their quarter-final win over Croatia while the team that beat them – Russia – had a an extra day off.
