USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski, Coach K as he’s been called for years, has pretty much done it all.
Already a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame; a three-time NCAA champion with Duke University (1991, 1992, 2001); he has been selected the National Collegiate Coach of the Year 12 times in eight different seasons; and has averaged an amazing 26.1 wins per season during his 28-year (1980-81 through 2007-08) career at Duke. Krzyzewski also boasts of a long resume of international basketball coaching experience. A member of 11 USA coaching staffs, team with Coach K as part of the staff have compiled a shinning 73-7 overall mark for an 91.3 winning percentage, and in the 10 international competitions Coach K has been involved in, those USA teams have captured six gold medals, two silver and two bronze medals. An assistant coach with the 1992 “Dream Team” that took the 1992 Barcelona Olympics by storm, Coach K was chosen head coach of the USA Senior National Team on Oct. 28, 2005. Boasting of a 23-1 win-loss record as head coach of the USA senior program, he directed the U.S. to an 8-1 record and bronze medal finish at the 2006 FIBA World Championship, and last summer led the Americans at the FIBA Americas Championship to a 10-0 record, the gold medal and a qualifying berth in the 2008 Olympics.
