Aito Garcia Reneses was handed the reins of the National Team in May after the surprise dismissal of coach Pepu Hernandez. He has quite a pedigree.
Last season alone, he was named coach of the year by his colleagues after leading DKV Joventut to Copa del Rey and ULEB Cup glory. Garcia Reneses has inherited the team that won the gold medal at the 2006 FIBA World Championhip and EuroBasket 2007 silver under Hernandez. With 35 years of experience in Spain’s ACB and nine league crowns, it’s hard to imagine that there could be a better person to lead Spain in Beijing. Garcia Reneses has always placed his trust in youngsters. National Team players such as Pau Gasol, Juan Carlos Navarro, Ricky Rubio and Rudy Fernandez made their professional debuts under him.
