Alberto de Carvalho returned to Angola in 2006 as boss of Petro Atletico after 20 years coaching in Portugal.
Not long after, “Ginguba” took over the National Team reins from Angola boss Mario Palma, the man who led the country to four straight gold medals at FIBA Africa Championships. Palma’s teams participated in two Olympics and one FIBA World Championship. Carvalho has injected new blood into the team, which finished ninth at the 2006 FIBA World Championship - the best position ever achieved by an African team in the tournament. Carvalho's men won the 24th FIBA Africa Championship last year in Angola.
