Career: Joventut (Spain-ACB, 2005-08)
Ricky Rubio is one of the most talked about talents ever to emerge in the European game. Since his days with Spain’s youth teams, he has always made headlines. While playing in the U16 European Championship final in 2006, his 51 points, 24 rebounds and 12 assists propelled Spain past Russia in a 110-106 double-overtime triumph. That performance was Rubio’s launchpad for superstardom. Rubio actually played his first game for DKV Joventut in the highly-demanding ACB League at just 14 years of age. This year, in his first full season as a professional and still only 17, he started for DKV and helped the Badalona outfit win the Copa del Rey and ULEB Cup. Rubio was so good that he was voted into the ACB’s ‘Ideal Quintet’ along with fellow Spain international Rudy Fernandez, Marc Gasol, Felipe Reyes and Marcelo Huertas.
