Selected in the first round of the 2004 NBA draft (#23) by the Portland Trailblazers.

When the talented forward emerged in 2002 with Saratov, alongside Viktor Khryapa, Sergey Monya was expected to become the next big thing in Russian basketball. Athletic and explosive, capable of hitting jumpers from any distance and a solid defender, it didn’t take long for Monya to gain the attention of NBA franchises. But, up to this day, he still has not met expectations and has built for himself a reputation as an underachiever. His season in the NBA did not help. Could he be a late bloomer? He might. In the meantime, he has to find a new role, that of a complementary versatile swingman, which he did last season with Dynamo in the Superleague (8.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game) and at EuroBasket 2007.
