GRE/ANG – Greece return to winning ways with big triumph over Angola

BEIJING (Olympics) – Greece were no match for the United States in their highly-anticipated game on Wednesday but they had very little trouble with FIBA Africa champions Angola on Saturday morning.

Ioannis Bourousis had 22 points on a perfect nine of nine shooting from the floor and Greece made 10 of 17 shots from long range en route to a 102-61 triumph.

Leading 12-11, Panagiotis Yannakis’ men reeled off 10 consecutive points at the start of the second quarter and held a comfortable lead for the rest of the first half.

Offensive rebounds and excellent defense allowed the Greeks to go on the decisive spurt.

Fotsis’ three-pointer which extended the lead to 17-11 came after Vasilis Spanoulis claimed the rebound off his own miss to keep the ball in the hands of Greece.

Not long after, Dimitris Diamantidis pressured Angola guard Armando Costa and came up with a steal before drilling a three-ball to make it 20-11.

On their next trip down the floor, Greece had two offensive boards – the second by Fotsis off Kostas Tsartsaris’ miss.

Fotsis, fouled on his attempted put-back, went to go to the charity stripe to make two free throws and stretch the advantage to 22-11.

The Greeks then blew the game wide open in the third quarter, outscoring the Angolans 38-14 for an 81-42 stranglehold on proceedings with just 10 minutes remaining in the game.

The victory has left Greece in third place in Group B and eliminated winless Angola from contention for a place in the quarter-finals.

Next up for the Greeks is a clash on Monday with Beijing Games hosts China.

As is normally the case for Yannakis’ team, they out-rebounded the opponents. On Saturday, Andreas Glyniadakis and Antonis Fotsis each had seven of Greece’s 42 boards with the Angolans hauling in just 25 themselves.

Panagiotis Vasilopoulos had 10 points and five rebounds for the Greeks, while Angola were led by Eduardo Mingas’ 23 points.

Vladimir Jeronimo had seven rebounds to go with his eight points for the Africans.
