Overview
Female Future
Their game is there, their names aren’t. Just like for the Junior Men’s tournaments, this championship is the showcase of talent, determination and the quality of youth programs around the globe. The list of the players, who played in former edition, reads like a who’s who of women’s basketball.
Some of the biggest stars of the game made their international debut in this championship: Lisa Leslie, Michele Timms, Janeth Arcain, Marga Dydek, Cathy Melain, Lauren Jackson and Ilona Korstine.
Is it good for women’s basketball to lower the ring? Some of the players in this championship will tell you: “No need, we can dunk the ball anyhow”
The Slovak Republic and their capital Bratislava have been chosen to host the event from 26th July to 5th August 2007. 16 teams from five continents will give the proof that it might be worthwhile to go to Bratislava and discover a beautiful country and the brilliant future of women’s basketball.
In an overture to the championship, the draw for the event took place in the hosting city on 6th March 2007:
Group A: Argentina, Korea, Slovak Republic and Spain
Group B: China, Ivory Coast, Lithuania and USA
Group C: Canada, Czech Republic, Japan and Serbia
Group D: Australia, Brazil. Mali and Sweden
Eligible are all players who are born 1st January 1988 or later.
The teams placed 1st – 3rd in each group will qualify for the next round in two groups of six teams, before the top four placed teams go to the Final Round.
In the previous six editions the USA and the Soviet Union won the gold medal twice, whereas Australia and the Czech Republic could secure the title once.
